Turning School Holidays into Opportunities For Growth

Nelson Mandela once said that "education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." His words continue to remind us that learning is not confined to classrooms or school calendars. It happens wherever people are willing to share their knowledge, invest their time, and encourage others to grow.

Throughout Mandela Month, JA South Africa embraced that spirit by transforming the winter school holidays into an opportunity for learning, connection, and personal development.

In partnership with Siyafunda CTC, Philani Community Development Centre, Khutlo Tharo, Orlando CKC, and Umnotho Empowerment Centre, the Future of Work Holiday Program brought together school learners and out of school youth from communities across South Africa. Rather than allowing the holidays to become a pause in learning, participants were invited to spend time exploring new ideas, building practical skills, and reflecting on the possibilities that lie ahead.

The program encouraged participants to think about how the world around them is changing and how they can continue developing the qualities that will help them adapt, contribute, and grow. Through interactive activities and meaningful discussions, they explored topics such as communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and resilience, skills that remain valuable regardless of the career paths they choose.

A highlight of the program was the opportunity to engage with volunteers from SAP, who generously shared their time and experiences with participants. Rather than focusing only on their professional achievements, they spoke candidly about the decisions they had made, the setbacks they had encountered, and the lessons they had learned along the way. Their stories reminded participants that success is rarely a straight line and that curiosity, perseverance, and a willingness to keep learning are often the qualities that make the greatest difference.

The conversations were equally inspiring. Participants asked thoughtful questions about careers, technology, and the changing world of work while exchanging ideas and learning from one another. For many, these interactions provided valuable exposure to perspectives and experiences they may not otherwise have encountered during the school holidays.

What made the initiative particularly meaningful was the collaboration behind it. Community organizations, volunteers, and JA South Africa came together with a shared commitment to investing in young people, demonstrating that creating meaningful learning experiences is a responsibility shared across society.

As Mandela Month reminds us, making a difference does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it begins with sharing knowledge, opening doors, or simply giving young people the time and encouragement to discover what they are capable of achieving.
