Making Financial Literacy Fun: Our Holiday Kahoot! Challenge

School holidays are often seen as a time to switch off, relax, and take a break from learning. But this July, hundreds of young people chose to do something different. Before returning to school for the third term, they challenged themselves to build one of the most valuable life skills they will ever need: financial literacy.

To keep learners engaged during the winter break and in celebration of National Savings Month, JA South Africa launched its very first More Than Money Kahoot! Challenge, inviting young people from across the country to complete the More Than Money course on the JA South Africa eLearning Hub before putting their knowledge to the test in an exciting online competition.

The challenge remained open throughout the school holidays, giving learners the flexibility to learn at their own pace before entries closed on 21 July, as schools reopened across the country.

Before answering a single quiz question, participants completed the More Than Money learning experience, exploring topics such as budgeting, saving, responsible spending, setting financial goals, and making informed financial decisions. Through practical scenarios and interactive activities, they discovered that managing money is not simply about numbers. It is about making choices that can shape their future.

With the learning complete, it was time to compete.

The Kahoot! Challenge transformed financial education into an energetic contest of speed, knowledge, and accuracy. Every question tested not only what participants had remembered, but how well they understood the concepts they had explored throughout the course. It was learning brought to life through friendly competition.

On 23 July, JA South Africa announced Kaylene Adolf from Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation as the winner of the inaugural challenge. Her outstanding performance earned her a JA South Africa prize hamper packed with branded merchandise, chocolates, and a R300 Spur voucher, but perhaps the greatest reward was the knowledge and confidence she gained along the way.

Kaylene's achievement reflects what is possible when young people embrace opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. By choosing to invest part of her school holiday in developing financial skills, she demonstrated that curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to keep learning can open doors long before a career begins.

The challenge also highlighted the important role that parents and guardians play in supporting learning beyond the school day. Whether encouraging participation, helping learners access the eLearning Hub, or celebrating their achievements, families helped create an environment where learning continued long after the final school bell had rung.

Financial habits begin long before adulthood. Every lesson about saving, budgeting, spending wisely, and planning ahead helps lay the foundation for greater financial confidence and independence in the years to come.

The success of the More Than Money Kahoot! Challenge proved that learning does not have to stop when schools close. Sometimes, all it takes is an opportunity, a little healthy competition, and the curiosity to keep learning.
