Building Businesses In A Changing World
The challenges facing today's generation look very different from those faced by those who came before them.
Climate change, resource constraints, economic uncertainty, and rising social inequality are no longer distant concepts discussed only in policy documents or global forums. They are realities that increasingly shape the communities where young people live, learn, and work. Preparing young people for the future therefore requires more than teaching traditional business skills. It requires helping them understand how innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability can work together to address complex challenges and create meaningful opportunities.
This belief sits at the heart of JA South Africa's Sustainable Business Venture Program. Throughout May 2026, more than 900 learners from 19 schools across Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Limpopo, and North West participated in the program, exploring how businesses can create both economic value and positive social impact.
Through practical learning experiences, learners were introduced to entrepreneurship, sustainability, financial responsibility, innovation, and problem solving. They were encouraged to think critically about the challenges facing their communities and consider how business solutions could contribute to addressing them. Rather than focusing solely on profit, the program challenged learners to think more broadly about the role businesses can play in society.
What happens when entrepreneurs consider environmental impact alongside financial sustainability? How can businesses respond to community needs while creating economic opportunities? What does responsible business leadership look like in a rapidly changing world? These were some of the questions learners explored as they worked through activities designed to connect entrepreneurship with real world challenges.
The program also created opportunities for learners to develop skills that extend beyond business ownership. Critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity, and decision making were woven throughout the learning experience, helping learners strengthen capabilities that remain relevant across a wide range of future careers. Perhaps most importantly, the program encouraged learners to view themselves as problem solvers.
Entrepreneurship is often associated with starting companies, but at its core it is about identifying opportunities, responding to challenges, and creating value. These qualities are increasingly important in a world where adaptability and innovation continue to shape personal and professional success. As learners developed ideas and explored solutions, they gained firsthand experience in applying these principles to situations that reflected the realities of their own communities.
The experience reinforced an important lesson: sustainable business is not only about building enterprises that survive. It is about creating ventures that contribute positively to the people, communities, and environments they serve. As the world of work continues to evolve, programs like Sustainable Business Venture help prepare young people to think beyond immediate challenges and consider the long term impact of the decisions they make.
Because the future will require more than entrepreneurs who can build businesses. It will require leaders who can build solutions.
